FiReGlobal : west coast / 2009 FiReStars
What is the FiReStars program?
Strategic News Service (SNS) is selecting 8 businesses - top startups or businesses with new startup technology -
for world promotion, based on nominations by trusted strategic investment SNS Members. We believe that these FiReStar
businesses, which will be integrated into the FiReGlobal : West Coast program, are on the cusp of making great strides in
improving our world. They are businesses we believe you should know about.
How does the process work?
SNS Members have access to and knowledge of key world-changing new businesses, or businesses with new technologies,
that deserve recognition. We have therefore invited the general SNS Membership, government offices in the Northwest
and Canada, and a select number of SNS Member investment firms, to nominate businesses they know that fit into this
high-caliber category. We review these nominations and then select 8 finalists to feature at the FiReGlobal : West Coast
conference. These are businesses we expect much of, and which we plan to follow for a long time.
In addition to promoting these businesses before, during, and after FiReGlobal : West Coast, we will follow up with each
FiReStar company to learn how and in what ways their businesses change as a result of their FiReGlobal participation.
If you would like your company to be considered as a FiReStar nominee now or in the future, please contact Sharon Anderson-Morris,
Director of SNS Programs, at sam@stratnews.com.

HOANA
Launched in 2002, Hoana Medical Inc. ("Hoana") has raised $40 million in private equity to build the world's
leading healthcare company focused on Intelligent Medical Vigilance. Today, Hoana manufactures and sells a unique
life-saving medical technology called the LifeBed™ Patient Vigilance System, a reusable-disposable
("reposable") mattress coverlet that tracks a patient's basic vital signs without any wires or connection to the
patient. Hoana recently introduced a new version of the LifeBed focused on emergency room overcrowding, called the
LifeGurney™ Patient Vigilance System.
Each year, approximately 200,000 people die in U.S. hospitals from errors and mistakes, with nearly 40% of all
unanticipated deaths occurring on medical-surgical floors of acute-care hospitals ("Transforming Care at the
Bedside," Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, 2006). A recent study showed that your "odds of survival from a
heart attack are better in a casino than in a hospital" ("Survival from In-Hospital Cardiac Arrests During
Nights & Weekends," Journal of the American Medical Association, Peberdy et al., February 20, 2008).
Hoana's technology can transform any hospital bed into a LifeBed or LifeGurney. Since receiving
U.S. Food & Drug Administration clearance in 2006, the LifeBed has been used by over 35,000 medical/surgical
acute-care patients, resulting in hundreds of life-saving patient interventions.

Sea Breeze Power Corp.
Sea Breeze Power Corp. is focused on expediting widespread adoption of renewable energy at the utility scale.
Sea Breeze was the first company to initiate development of wind power generation in British Columbia.
Through a joint venture with Boundless Energy LLC, the company has undertaken several leadership initiatives
throughout Western North America in the development of strategic transmission projects to improve market access for renewable resources.
The company's flagship transmission project, the Juan de Fuca Cable, will connect the British Columbia transmission
grid at Victoria, British Columbia, with an undersea cable to the Bonneville Power AdministrationÕs transmission system
at Port Angeles, Washington.
The Juan de Fuca Cable project was the first independently developed international transmission line to have received
full permits from both Canada's National Energy Board and the U.S. Department of Energy. Construction, expected to be
completed within two years, is planned to begin in 2010.
The Juan de Fuca Cable will use High Voltage Direct Current Light® ("HVDC
Light®") technology, which offers environmental attributes such as the elimination of fluctuating electromagnetic
fields, and provides speed and responsiveness ideally suited for digital control and support of Smart Grid applications
and for integration of intermittent renewable resources.
Sea Breeze Power Corp.'s internal goals are to achieve superior, long-term financial returns for its shareholders and
investors and to provide a satisfying, supportive, and well-compensated working environment for its staff and management.
